Getting started
How do I set up my budget?
Your budget starts with common categories. On the Budget page, type how much you plan for each category this month. Your plan includes a setup helper that suggests amounts from a few questions.
Which budgeting style should I use?
Simple works for most people: plan each category and see what's left. You can switch to 50/30/20, zero-based or envelope in Settings at any time.
How do I add spending quickly?
Use Quick add on the Home page: the amount, where, and (optionally) a category. Or type it, like “40 groceries yesterday”.
Importing
What can I import?
A CSV file from your bank's website, a PDF statement (text PDFs, password-protected too), or the ClearPenny spreadsheet from Etsy. Everything is shown for review before it's saved, and duplicates are flagged.
My bank's CSV columns are wrong.
On the review screen, pick the right column for the date, description and amount, then click “Update the preview”. ClearPenny remembers your bank's layout for next time.
Do you keep my files?
No. Files are read to show you the preview and then thrown away. Account numbers are never saved.
Plans, credits and Etsy
Is it a subscription?
No. Base and Pro are one-time purchases. You can upgrade from Base to Pro by paying the difference.
I bought the spreadsheet on Etsy. How do I unlock the app?
Create your account, then go to clearpenny.app/redeem and enter your Etsy order number and the email you used on Etsy. Etsy's notice can take a few minutes to reach us.
What are AI credits?
Ask AI and typing a transaction in plain words use one credit each. Your plan includes some; you can top up on the Plan page. Credits don't expire.
Sharing (Pro)
How do I share a budget with my partner?
In Settings, under “Who shares this budget”, enter their email. They create a free login with that email and join. They don't need their own plan while you have Pro.
Can I stop sharing?
Yes. Remove anyone in Settings at any time, and anyone can leave a budget they were invited to.
Your data and privacy
Can I download my data?
Yes. In Settings, download any budget as an Excel file (Google Sheets opens it too) or all your account data.
How do I delete my account?
In Settings, under “Your data”. It's permanent: your budgets, plan and credits are deleted.
Is AI financial advice?
No. AI answers are general information from your own numbers, and can make mistakes.
